Joe Biden Supports Free Healthcare For DACA Undocumented Immigrants
Former Vice president Joe Biden has come out in favor of free healthcare for undocumented immigrants who qualify for former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Biden made the case for this when he released a “unity” platform with Sen. Bernie Sanders earlier this week.
“To ensure that people living and working across the country have health care access, the Task Force recommends extending Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients, allowing undocumented immigrants to purchase unsubsidized coverage in the ACA marketplaces, and working with Congress to lift the five-year waiting period for low-income lawfully present immigrants for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program eligibility,” the platform reads.
As more and more attention is paid to the general election, it will be interesting to see if Biden ultimately stands by this position.
In 2019, a poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News found that providing healthcare for undocumented immigrants was an immensely unpopular position and could hurt Democrats when election time rolls around.
